A request for comment from PEOPLE was not immediately returned by the United States Capitol Police. Officers escorted Philipps away while she was wearing a crop top printed with the words “I WILL AID AND ABET ABORTION.” Reporters asked the actress why she was arrested and she answered “for equality.”

Philipps documented the protest and her detention on social media, posting images and videos on Instagram. “We must make certain that it applies to each and every one of us. You guys are about to witness the fight of your lives. It won’t be quick, easy, or free of obstacles. However, we must continue to turn up and act. You have to. I swear to you.” Philipps, who has been vocal about her own abortion at the age of 15, told her 2.3 million Instagram Story fans in a video: “This is something I’m doing for all of you. For my children, for my mother, and for my grandmother, I’m putting myself through this ordeal.”

PEOPLE reached out to Alysia Reiner, who was also detained at the protest, but her representative did not immediately respond. At the same time, Vice President Joe Biden announced that he will have fresh information to share with some of the nation’s governors after meeting with them on Friday. I believe we must codify Roe v. Wade in the law, and that is the most important thing to be clear about.

” For this, Congress must vote on it, and if the filibuster comes in the way, “it’s like voting rights—it should [be] [that] we give an exception to this… needing an exception to the filibuster.” The Supreme Court’s 6-to-3 decision on Friday overturned nearly 50 years of precedent, allowing states the ability to make their own laws governing abortions. In Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, and South Dakota, governors approved “trigger bans” following the Supreme Court’s decision, which has already led to abortion prohibitions in those states.
