Boris Announcement Friday: As the Omicron Virus Spreads, It Has Been Announced that Limitations on The Use of Covid in England May Be Raised!

When Boris Johnson presents his “living with COVID” proposal to MPs today, he is anticipated to repeal all of England’s remaining COVID regulations (Monday 21st February). After a meeting with the Cabinet on Monday morning, Mr. Johnson will brief the House of Commons on the government’s plans. Downing Street will host a COVID press conference led by the prime minister.

In January 2022, the majority of England’s remaining COVID regulations were repealed, with facial coverings and COVID passes no longer legally necessary. However, today’s briefing is expected to be another milestone in Britain’s long-term coronavirus policy, bringing an end to two years of pandemic limitations.

It’s also possible to catch the broadcast online via BBC News on BBC iPlayer and Sky News on YouTube.

On the 10 Downing Street social media accounts, the press conference will also be available. Boris Johnson’s original announcement in the House of Commons is expected to be covered on BBC News and Sky News and is also available on BBC Parliament on BBC iPlayer.

From Boris Johnson’s Statement, What Can We Expect?

During today’s briefing, Johnson is expected to confirm the decision to scrap self-isolation. Downing Street had previously stated that anyone in England who test positive for coronavirus will no longer be legally obligated to self-isolate.

A schedule for the elimination of free COVID tests is also expected to be laid forth by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in his speech. PCR tests for most persons with COVID symptoms and free LFTs for the majority of the population are likely to be discontinued.

These adjustments are likely to be expanded upon in the future. Buckingham Palace acknowledged the Queen had tested positive for coronavirus and was experiencing “mild cold-like symptoms” prior to Johnson’s announcement.

Plan B Is in The Works.

To date, the UK government has resisted using its Plan B, despite an increase in the number of new Covid cases (336,893 in the last seven days), saying it would only do so if the number of cases threatened to substantially impair healthcare service operations.

After enacting Plan B, the government stated in November that if the Covid pass is used, it would restrict access to certain public spaces, such as nightclubs and other crowded venues, to those who are fully vaccinated or who have recently had a negative Covid test or have recently recovered from Covid.

Government officials said that under Plan B, obligatory vaccine certification will be introduced in a small number of settings with certain features. As far as the government is concerned, it doesn’t think it’s necessary to require vaccine certification beyond these settings, but “if Plan B is adopted, it may be on short notice in reaction to alarming statistics,” it stated.

The number of people admitted to the UK’s hospitals has remained far lower than past peaks thanks to Covid vaccinations, which minimize the risk of serious infection, hospitalization, and death.

The omicron variety remains a major concern for health officials as more information is gathered to help them better understand its risk profile.
