Who Is Richard Engel: Richard Engel Describes the Death of His “beloved” Son, Henry, 6!

Richard Engel revealed that his 6-year-old son Henry had passed away following a long fight with Rett Syndrome. On Thursday, the 48-year-old top international correspondent for NBC News tweeted the devastating news. A memorial page on the Texas Children’s Hospital website states that Richard and Mary’s son Henry passed away on August 9.

Born in the United States on September 16th, 1973, Richard Engel is currently the head international reporter for NBC News. On April 18, 2008, he was promoted from his position as the network’s Middle East correspondent and Beirut bureau head. Freelance journalist Engel covered the beginning of the 2003 Iraq War for ABC News from Baghdad before joining NBC in May of that year.

As a journalist, Engel is well-known for his coverage of major conflicts like the Iraq War, the Arab Spring, and the Syrian Civil War. Besides Arabic, Italian, and Spanish, he is also fluent in reading and writing Arabic. Engel’s “War Zone Diary” won the Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism.

Early Life.

Engel spent his formative years on Manhattan’s affluent Upper East Side. David, his older brother, practices cardiology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Because of his dyslexia, his parents, Peter, a former Goldman Sachs investor, and Nina, the owner of an antique boutique, were worried about his future. His Jewish dad and Swedish mom make for an interesting mix.

Though he eventually flourished academically, Engel had a difficult time getting forward in his early years at Riverdale Country School, a rigorous New York City preparatory school. When he was 13, he went to a wilderness survival camp where he gained confidence and learned to take charge of his own life.

His grades started rising and he became more well-liked by his classmates.  He then studied abroad in Italy during his junior year of high school, where he quickly mastered the language. After finishing his degree at Stanford, Engel moved to Cairo because he believed that was where the next big story would break. What drew him to journalism was “the potential of learning about new things and having the opportunity of riding the train of history rather than watching it pass,” he said. For four years he was a freelance reporter in Cairo, Egypt, where he first honed his Arabic skills while residing in a rundown seven-story walk-up. From 2001 to 2003, Engel served as the Middle East correspondent for The World, a collaboration between BBC World Service, PRI, and WGBH. The New York Times, Reuters, AFP, and Jane’s Defence Weekly have featured his work. During the first U.S. invasion of Iraq, Engel was a freelance journalist for ABC News. Engel remained in Baghdad as NBC’s primary Iraq correspondent, where he resumed reporting on the conflict.

Personal Life.

Engel Was Previously Married to Another Stanford Student, but They Split up In 2005. Engel Wed Mary Forrest, a Film Producer, in May 2015.  Henry, Born in September 2015, and Theodore, Due in August 2019, Are Their Boys. Henry Engel Passed Away on August 18, 2022, at The Age of 6, Having Been Born with Rett Syndrome, a Genetic Condition that Is Exceptionally Unusual Among Men.

In 2017, Henry Was Originally Diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a Rare Inherited Neurological Illness Associated with Profound Physical and Cognitive Disabilities for Which There Is Now No Treatment. in 2019, Henry’s Father, Engel, Told People that Doctors at Texas Children’s Hospital Were “working to Design a Medicine that Might Help Significantly” Because Henry Was “lacking a Conductor Gene.”
