The Department of Labor in New Jersey Has Made It Simpler for Jobless Individuals to Prove Their Identities.

New Jersey is the first state to provide unemployed applicants three options to verify their identification that meet federal security standards during Fraud Awareness Month in November.

Self-service, live video chat and accessible in-person identity-proofing are now available from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL).

Before receiving unemployment benefits, unemployed workers must verify their identities. To accommodate unemployed workers who cannot complete this step online, the in-person option can be completed at one of 18 state locations by appointment.

“We must balance fraud prevention and client access,” Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo stated.

This new alternative does that while conforming to improved security standards supported by federal agencies and protecting the Unemployment Trust Fund and the millions of New Jersey employees and businesses paying into it.

ID.me, a federally accredited security firm, uses NIST-compliant Identity Assurance Level 2 (IAL2) identity proofing for New Jersey and other state and federal agencies.

The Commissioner continued, “Unemployment systems around the country require identity verification to protect every worker requesting benefits. “New Jersey is leading in worker options.”

In 2011, New Jersey received USDOL’s “Unemployment Insurance Innovation Award for Integrity” for saving taxpayers $56 million in the first five months of an innovative anti-fraud scheme that prevented fake claimants from getting benefits after returning to work.

NJDOL increased identification verification when the pandemic spawned more complex identity theft schemes.

ID.me and other anti-fraud programs have prevented hundreds of thousands of bogus claims, saving billions.

Workers can verify their identity through a link on their unemployment claim submission page or through an NJDOL email. After signing up for ID.me, customers can pick how to authenticate their identity:

  • Self-service: the easiest option for workers who can upload a document and take a clear selfie.
  • Live video chat: excellent for those who find self-service difficult owing to technology restrictions or prefer non-biometric identity proofing.
  • In-person: excellent for people without a computer, cell phone, internet, or document issues.

Online and video chat are offered in various languages than English and Spanish.
