Pharmaceutical Advertising Firm Executives Admit to $38 Million Insurance Fraud Plot

On Tuesday, the Department of Justice announced that the owners of a pharmaceutical marketing company based in New Jersey had pleaded guilty to participating in a scheme to defraud insurance companies out of $38 million.

Synergy Medical LLC was used by Samantha Zaretsky, age 42, and Lee Nichols, age 43, to submit false insurance claims for high-priced compounded medications.

When no commercially available drug meets a patient’s specific needs, a compounding pharmacist may create a new treatment from scratch.

Patients willing to pay for pricey chemical drugs were recruited by sales agents employed by the two defendants between April 2014 and June 2016.

They’d figure out which elements brought in the most money, then put patients in touch with a consultancy firm.

Each offender could receive up to ten years in prison and a fine equal to two times the amount of money gained through the scam.
