With the release of the star-studded original film Spiderhead on Netflix, the streaming service is getting into the summer blockbuster vibe.
This thriller/comedy mash-up starring Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller, and others is the second film in Netflix’s 2022 film slate, which has already included The Adam Project and 365 Days: This Day.
Everything you need to know about Spiderhead is right here.
What exactly is the Spiderhead plot?
If the teaser didn’t explain enough about what’s going on with Spiderhead, here’s the official Netflix synopsis:
“Inmates wear a surgically connected gadget that distributes dosages of mind-altering medicines in return for commuted sentences in a state-of-the-art jail controlled by bright visionary Steve Amnesty.
No bars, cells, or orange jumpsuits are present. Volunteers in prison are free to be themselves in Spiderhead. Unless they aren’t.
They’re sometimes a better version.

Do you want to lighten up? There is a medication for it. Have you run out of words? There’s also medicine for it. When two subjects, Jeff and Lizzy, build a bond, their road to redemption becomes more complicated, as Abnesti’s experiments begin to test the boundaries of free will entirely.”
Spiderhead is based on George Saunders’ short tale Escape from Spiderhead from The New Yorker. The script was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick of Deadpool fame.
Who is in the cast of Spiderhead?
Chris Hemsworth plays Steve Abnesti in Spiderhead, Miles Teller plays Jeff, and Jurnee Smollett plays Lizzy.
Hemsworth is best known for playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which he will do again in 2022 with Thor: Love and Thunder.
Outside of the MCU, the Australian actor usually does a mix of straightforward action movies like Extraction and 12 Strong and movies like Bad Times at El Royale where he can do something a little different. Spiderhead looks more like the second one.
Like Hemsworth, Teller is going to have a busy summer. He has Top Gun: Maverick and Spiderhead. Teller is best known for his roles in movies like The Spectacular Now, Whiplash, and the Divergent series.
Smollett has been working in Hollywood since she was a child. She has been in shows like Full House and Eve’s Bayou, but the last couple of years have been especially good for her.
In 2020, she was in the critically acclaimed movie Birds of Prey and the Emmy-nominated HBO series Lovecraft Country, for which she was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Mark Paguio (Lonesome), Tess Haubrich (Alien: Covenant), Nathan Jones (Mad Max: Fury Road), and Charles Parnell are also in the cast of Spiderhead (Top Gun: Maverick).
What is the release date for Spiderhead?
Starting Friday, June 17, Spiderhead will only be available on Netflix.
Movie fans will have plenty to stream that week. Along with Spiderhead, Cha Cha Real Smooth will be the first show on Apple TV Plus, Father of the Bride will be the first show on HBO Max, and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande will be the first show on Hulu (in the US, theatres elsewhere). These are all movies for adults since Pixar’s “Lightyear” is likely to be the most popular movie that weekend.
