Safety Aboard Nj Transit’s Buses and Trains is a Top Priority.

KYW Newsradio, New Jersey, USA — SOUTH JERSEY. In an effort to decrease acts of aggression against drivers and personnel, New Jersey Transit has proposed a new policy.

If passed, the measure will give transit police the authority to permanently or temporarily ban passengers for inappropriate behavior.

Passengers who have been denied boarding will have the option to appeal their ban.

New Jersey Transit Police Chief Christoper Trucillo has expressed his department’s sadness over the rise in incidents of violence and harassment against transit workers around the country.

“One of the most terrible things that I witness,” Trujillo said, “is, and it may sound like a trivial thing when individuals spit on a bus operator or a train crew member.” Spitting on another person is both rude and unhygienic.

He laments the sad fact that more and more people today think it’s fine to spit on drivers.

According to Trucillo, law enforcement will treat each incident uniquely, giving special attention to cases with mental health issues.

There will be a 60-day opportunity for public discussion before the law is officially passed, and this process is currently underway.
