TRENTON, NJ — The New Jersey Senate Judiciary Committee is going to debate a bill the following week that would put an end to a predatory towing practice in the state during the epidemic of auto thefts that has been plaguing the state.
On Monday, the committee will consider a bill that would prohibit tow truck companies from requiring the owner of a stolen vehicle to pay a fee to release the vehicle from a storage facility.

The bill is sponsored by Democrat Vin Gopal of Monmouth County, and it would prohibit tow truck companies from doing so.
The “Predatory Towing Prevention Act” would be amended by this bill to prohibit towing companies from charging fees to the owner of a stolen motor vehicle as long as the owner provides a copy of the stolen vehicle police report to the towing company.
This provision would only apply if the owner provided a copy of the report to the towing company.
Tow truck firms are aware that victims of auto theft are frequently confronted with astronomically high expenses when they attempt to return their stolen vehicles.
