On July 1st, 1976, in Fort Myers, Florida, Algernon Lanier Washington became known as Plies. He attended Fort Myers Senior High School, where he participated in football as a receiver and defensive back. He was the class valedictorian and the best-dressed graduate in his graduating class.

Plies played wide receiver for the Miami University football team from 1995 to 1997 under Nod Washington. He subsequently changed schools and enrolled at the University of Central Florida, but he left before the academic year was up.

Plies and his stepbrother, Big Gates, founded the independent record label Big Gates Records in the late 1990s. After co-producing a song and touring Miami many times to promote it, Plies agreed to sign with the record company Slip-N-Slide-Records.

Legal Issues

After a nightclub shooting in Florida on July 2nd, 2006, police accused Plies of illegal possession of a concealed firearm. Members of Plies’ group are facing attempted murder charges after the gunfire that left five people injured. After Plies’ microphone was turned off due to the length of his performance, the shooting began. The promoter claims that Plies grew irate, shouted, started a fight, and then shot many times.
