After Drew Brees Signed With Purdue and Pointsbet, New Jersey Banned Betting on the Citrus Bowl.

According to ESPN, “some individual linked with the Purdue Football team” is in breach of state regulations, prompting an order to stop betting on the Citrus Bowl between Purdue and LSU in New Jersey bookmakers on Friday.

Former NFL quarterback Drew Brees supposedly fits that description.

Just in time for the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, Purdue announced on December 15 that Brees will be joining the Boilermakers coaching staff as an interim assistant. Brees played for the team for three years before entering the NFL in 2001.

After Jeff Brohm left for Louisville, Ryan Walters, the former Illinois defensive coordinator, became the new head coach at Purdue.

While Brees’ commercial affiliation with sportsbook PointsBet made it appear that he had a vested interest in the outcome of the Citrus Bowl, coaching for his alma mater seemed like a pleasant deal.

In 2021, he joined PointsBet’s marketing team as a brand ambassador and was awarded a partial ownership position in the company’s sportsbook. Brees’s affiliation with Purdue led to the recent termination of PointsBet’s partnership with him.
