As the title suggests, “Succession” thrusts viewers into the high-stakes realm of operating a media empire, complete with secret transactions, attempted coups, and shocking scandals. The cast and crew of the Emmy-nominated show, which will vie for further hardware on Monday, have insisted that their characters were inspired by a wide range of real-world dynasty businesses.
In a behind-the-scenes interview, showrunner Jesse Armstrong claimed the writers were inspired by “renowned media families like the Hearsts, through modern-day Redstone, John Malone, Robert Fitz of Comcast, Murdoch, and Robert and Rebekah Mercer, who started Breitbart.”

Early Life
Murdoch is the son of Sir Keith Murdoch (1885-1952) and Dame Elisabeth Murdoch (née Greene; 1909-2012), and he was born on March 11, 1931, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. His ancestors hail from the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Scotland. Murdoch’s paternal grandfather was a Presbyterian pastor, and both of his parents were born in Melbourne.
War journalist turned regional newspaper tycoon, Keith Murdoch was the chairman of the influential Herald and Weekly Times publishing group and owned two newspapers in Adelaide, South Australia, and a radio station in a remote mining town. At a later point in his life, Keith Rupert adopted his maternal grandfather’s first name as his own.
Personal Life
Murdoch purchased the 11-bedroom, 11-bathroom “Rosehearty” on Centre Island, New York’s 5-acre waterfront mansion in 2003. He bought a mansion, vineyard, and winery in Bel Air, Los Angeles County, called the Moraga Estate in May of 2013. Located around 4 miles (6.4 km) northeast of Reading in the English community of Binfield Heath, Murdoch and his new wife Jerry Hall purchased Holmwood, an estate and mansion built in the 18th century, in 2019.
