Who Is Baela Targaryen? Baela’s HOTD Future Predicted by Rhaenys in Secret?

Baela Targaryen’s destiny after House of the Dragon is discreetly foreshadowed by Rhaenys, but not in the way that Rhaenys had planned. Lucy, the heir to the “dead” Laenor Velaryon, is actually fathered by Ser Harwin Strong, which will make the succession of Driftmark a major story point in season 1 of House of the Dragon.

After Laena’s untimely death, Rhaenys Targaryen decreed that her eldest daughter Baela Targaryen should inherit Driftmark through Laena’s bloodline, as Baela had Velaryon blood and Lucerys did not. Despite Rhaenys’s recommendation, Corlys Velaryon does not name Baela as the heir to Driftmark. This is surprising, given that Laenor had no legitimate heirs.

Fire & Blood, by George R. R. Martin, reveals, however, that Driftmark continues to run in Baela’s family. Baela will wed Laenor’s legitimate bastard son, Alyn Velaryon, after the Dance of the Dragons (who is heavily implied to actually be the son of Corlys).

Who Is Baela Targaryen?

Daughter of Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and Lady Laena Velaryon, Baela Targaryen (earlier played by Savannah Steyn, now portrayed by Nanna Blondell). She is a twin to Rhaena Targaryen. The younger version of Baela, played by Shani Smethurst, will be portrayed by Antonia, while the older version, played by Antonia, will be portrayed by Smethurst.

Bella’s parents, Daemon and Rhaenyra (formerly represented by Milly Alcock, now portrayed by Emma D’Arcy), also have two younger brothers, Aegon and Viserys. Baela inherited her father’s talent as a dragon rider. A quick shot of her holding a dragon egg can be seen in the first preview for Episode 6, and it is expected that we will later see her riding her dragon, Moondancer.

What’s Going to Happen to Baela Targaryen in House of The Dragon?

Who Is Baela Targaryen?

While George R.R. Martin‘s Fire and Blood will only introduce Baela as a child in Episode 6, the character has a deep and rich backstory that the show has yet to explore. In the next episodes, Baela will be engaged to Jacaerys Velaryon, her cousin and step-brother (albeit with Viserys’ consent), despite the fact that they are not blood relatives. Soon, she’ll form an attachment to Moondancer.

In the novel, Baela chooses to stay on Dragonstone for the entire Dragon Dance. We won’t get into too much spoiler area for where the show might go from here, but with Aegon II also arriving next week, seeds will be sown for their future fiery battles.

What Does Baela Targaryen’s Scroll to Daemon Say?

Who Is Baela Targaryen?

Raymond Velaryon, with Queen Alicent’s backing, plans to challenge the validity of Rhaenyra’s sons in order to become heir to Driftmark, as detailed in a scroll written by Baela. Since Lord Corlys suffered a fatal injury offscreen, the succession to the Driftwood Throne is a pressing issue that must be addressed immediately.

Upon learning of Vaemond’s plot to take their son’s inheritance, Daemon and Rhaenyra moved swiftly to oppose it by proposing a marriage between Baela and Rhaena and Rhaenyra’s oldest sons in exchange for Rhaenys’s endorsement of Lucerys (Luke) as successor to the Sea Snake. After a dying King Viserys turns up to the proceedings in support of Luke, Rhaenys accepts the offer, and Vaemond is defeated.
