Early Life
When Zelma Priscilla (née Currie) and Floyd Richard Bullock welcomed their youngest daughter into the world on November 26, 1939, in Brownsville, Tennessee, they named her Anna Mae Bullock. Her father was an overseer of sharecroppers at Poindexter Farm on Highway 180, and the family lived in the surrounding rural unincorporated village of Nutbush, Tennessee;
she subsequently recounted harvesting cotton with her family as a child. During her appearance on Dr. Henry Louis Gates’s PBS series African American Lives 2, he revealed that her ancestry DNA test results indicated that she was about 69% African, 33% European, and 1% Native American.
Career
She had previously assumed that her Native American background was substantial.
Bullock started going out to bars and clubs with her sister more often once she started a job in the entertainment industry in St. Louis and East St. Louis. Â At the Manhattan Club in East St. Louis, she witnessed Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm for the first time.
Bullock was so taken aback by his skill that she “nearly went into a trance”. Despite the fact that very few women have ever sung with Turner before, she approached him about joining his band and he agreed. For some reason, Turner never called her after promising to. During an intermission during a 1957 show, she stole the mic from Kings of Rhythm drummer Eugene Washington and belted out “You Know I Love You,” a blues ballad made famous by B.B. King.
Personal Life
Turner (then known as Ann Bullock) fell in love with Harry Taylor when they were both still in Brownsville. They first interacted at a varsity basketball game. Taylor transferred from another school in order to be closer to her. They dated for a full year and she told Rolling Stone in 1986, “Harry was super popular and had dozens of girlfriends, but eventually I got him.” They broke up after she found out that Taylor had married another woman who was carrying his child.
Bullock and her sister Alline were introduced to Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm after relocating to St. Louis. Bullock started dating the saxophonist in the band, Raymond Hill, while Alline dated the drummer, Eugene Washington. Pregnant during her final year of high school, she decided to move in with Hill, who was living with Ike Turner.
