On Friday, December 23, a vote of 225 to 201 was cast in favour of passing the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 through the House. A summer EBT (P-EBT) programme for eligible pupils during a pandemic is funded at $40 million.
Child Nutrition Program Benefits
During the summer months when school is not in session, the P-EBT programme provides the following to qualified students:
- If a SNAP-eligible family’s daycare centre closes, reduces its hours, or enrols fewer children, or if the family’s home is located near a school that has done so, the children in the household will be eligible for a benefit.
- Students who qualified for free or reduced-price meals during the current school year, as well as students who are newly determined to be qualified for meal benefits during the summer, can use P-EBT in states with an authorised SY 2021-22 plan for school children and/or children in child care.
- The P-EBT programme is open to any children under the age of six who are enrolled in SNAP during the summer.

- Temporary emergency nutrition benefits of up to $40 per child each month are placed onto EBT cards that can be used to purchase food.
- Summertime meals in rural areas might be delivered or picked up.
- You can save money and time by bringing home enough food to last you for up to ten days instead of constantly eating out.
- Children who, but for the school being closed for at least five consecutive days, would have qualified for free or reduced-cost meals under the National School Lunch Act may be eligible for P-EBT payments.
EBT Summer Benefits
Millions of people will breathe a sigh of relief at the news that summer EBT payments from the epidemic era will be made permanent.
The programme has greatly helped to lessen the incidence of hunger. According to the Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey, food insecurity has been on the rise again after plunging to record lows after the implementation of pandemic mitigation measures in late 2020 and early 2021.
The number of people in families with children who reported having adequate food the previous week rose by 4.
