According to the Newport News, Virginia Police Department, no pupils were hurt during the incident at Richneck Elementary School.

According to Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew, “the altercation was between a 6-year-old, the youngster who did have the pistol, and the teacher.” Clearly, “this shooting was not an accident.”

Drew said a report was received about the incident at about 2 p.m. and officials responded:

“within minutes.” He assured the public that the danger was over and no longer present.

There was no one attempting to avoid the school shooting. We had a scenario in one particular spot where a gunshot was discharged,” Drew stated in a press conference.

Specifically addressing the student’s weapon, Drew stated, “I want to know where that firearm came from.”

He said the boy remained in custody Friday evening as officials decided what services he would need and how to approach the situation.

Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones remarked at a press conference, “It’s a dark day for Newport News, we’re going to learn from this and we’ll come back stronger.”

The mother of a fourth grader, Joselin Glover, told The Virginian-Pilot that the school had texted her to say that a shooting had occurred and that two people were in custody.

Her heart literally stopped, she said. “I was freaking out, terribly nervous.

Just wondering if that one individual was my son.”

Her 9-year-old, Carlos, was outside playing with his friends. He and his students, however, quickly found refuge in the back of the classroom.
