Njdol and Rowan University Have Teamed up To Create an Apprenticeship Programme for Retail Cannabis Workers

One of the first apprenticeship programmes in the country is being launched by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development in conjunction with Rowan University, local labour unions, and a cannabis cultivator in South Jersey to help entrepreneurs succeed in the state’s newly legalised cannabis market.

According to a news release issued by Rowan on December 20th, the New Jersey Department of Labor has pledged $325,000 toward the creation of a curriculum that provides industry-specific training in order to provide routes for employees, particularly those in underrepresented regions.

While Rowan College of South Jersey will be responsible for coordinating the retail program’s activities and developing education and training courses, the university will work with Rowan College of South Jersey to offer apprenticeships in cannabis production, manufacturing, and distribution.

In addition to registering students, keeping tabs on their training, finding them new instructors, keeping them on staff, and making sure they don’t drop out, this institution will also give fundamental skills instruction, tests, and certifications recognised by employers.

Rowan University reports that Loud Wellness Inc.’s Glassboro cultivation and manufacturing facility will provide apprentices with technical instruction and hands-on learning experiences.

For residents who will be ready to make an instant effect in the cannabis retail market, Rowan University President Ali Houshmand said, “Through this relationship, we will establish degrees, from pre-apprenticeship through graduate degrees. To this end, we will collaborate with other organisations to address the needs of businesses while also creating prospects for long-term employment.

Eight months ago, Rowan University began offering the first Master of Business Administration (MBA) in cannabis commercialization, with a focus on business-oriented education tailored to suit the developing and changing demands of the new industry.

The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 360 will integrate the course materials into its own LMS. The AFL-CIO and UFCW Local 360 will work together to help with hiring, keeping employees, and fostering positive working relationships with employers.

At the same time that it is focusing on recruiting, apprentice onboarding, and training, the Gloucester County Workforce Development Board will also conduct outreach to certain communities, as reported by the institution.

According to Charles Wowkanech, president of the New Jersey State AFL-CIO, “organised labour looks forward to partnering with academia, business, and government to craft a programme to ensure the best trained workforce and quality jobs are the standard in the cannabis industry” now that medical and recreational cannabis are legal in the state. I applaud the efforts of the Murphy administration, which have made New Jersey a national leader in cannabis workforce training.
