Murphy Has Signed an Executive Order to Protect Transgender People Living in New Jersey.

A new law signed by Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey would keep name-change data confidential. Murphy has stated that this move will serve to safeguard the civil liberties of transgender people in Garden State.

An executive order exempting from the Open Public Records Act the identities of all New Jersey residents who have filed with the Department of Treasury since 1948 to legally alter their names became effective last week.

A citizen may request a government record under the Open Public Records Act. The law’s primary target audience is New Jersey’s transgender community, but it will also apply to anyone who has legally changed their name due to marriage or another circumstance.
