Coach in The Bronx Takes a Stand After Anti-Semitic Remarks Were Made by Kyrie Irving

Bronx basketball instructor claims he felt compelled to take action after hearing that Brooklyn Nets player Kyrie Irving had been punished for antisemitic statements last month.

Fannie Lou’s public school coach Marc Skelton set up a practise game against the local yeshiva, Salanter Akiba Riverdale (SAR).

While Fannie Lou competes in the Bronx’s Public Schools Athletic League, SAR High School is fighting for supremacy in the Yeshiva League.

With the scrimmage having no bearing on the standings, the outcome of the game was less of a concern for some of the players.

“They’re regular folks; there’s nothing unusual about them.”

When senior point guard for SAR, Akiva Schanzer, helped his side to a 30-plus point victory, he gathered all the players together for a Kosher lunch, where he explained the meaning of the word Kosher and expressed his hope that games of this nature would become more commonplace.

Schanzer: “I’ve been playing in the Yeshiva league all these years, I’ve been playing against the same folks, this is excellent it mixes things up a little bit.” It’s as if we played a game and then ran into each other in the street and I was like, ‘that’s my boys.’

As a person of Jewish ancestry, Skelton felt it was important for his staff to show their support for the Jewish community and have a deeper understanding of the Jewish way of life.

“We’re nearly unable to heal because it’s almost disaster after tragedy,” Skelton added. “Wearing a t-shirt isn’t enough; neither is writing an essay or lecturing against antisemitism.
