Deputy Police Chief Richard Conklin of Stamford said, “It was a pretty extreme circumstance” when the body of a 56-year-old man was found when a state marshal attempted to serve an eviction notice.
Officials in Connecticut estimate that the “severely decomposed” body recovered inside an apartment building there had been there for months.
The Stamford Advocate and Patch.com report that at around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, the unidentified remains of a man believed to be 56 years old were discovered in an apartment on Hope Street in Stamford.
Patch.com quotes Assistant Chief Richard Conklin of the Stamford Police Department as saying that the finding was made by a Connecticut state marshal who was attempting to serve eviction papers.
The outlet quotes Stamford police as saying that the body could have been in the woods for nine to ten months.
“The resident was badly decayed,” Conklin added. Clearly, this was a case of hoarding. The residential building was infested with rodents. The situation was dire.
Conklin told the Advocate that he believes the man’s death was the result of natural causes.
Patch.com reports that the remains will be examined by the Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
A PEOPLE call to the Stamford Police Department went unanswered for some time.
Conklin told the Advocate that “a few” times a year, the Stamford Police Department deals with incidents like this one, in which a decomposing body is discovered.
According to News12 New Jersey, police are asking locals to “keep an eye” on their neighbors.

Conklin said police can conduct welfare checks on those who haven’t been seen in a while “and perhaps avert an extreme circumstance like this.
Conklin added, “We’d like to reach out to the community and ask individuals that if you have anybody in your community, your neighborhood, your building or the apartment complex that you haven’t seen and you notice their mail is piling up — or some circumstance like that — to please inform us.”
Late last month, authorities in Carroll County, Ohio, made a similar discovery; a 79-year-old lady and her 59-year-old son’s bodies were located there.
When the bodies were found on December 26th, officials estimated that they had been inside the house for at least a year and a half.
