Christine Clarke, an environmental activist, announced today that she will challenge State Senator Anthony M. Bucco (R-Boonton) for a seat in the New Jersey Legislature from the 25th district.
Clarke was unsuccessful in his bids for the 26th district Assembly seat in 2019 and the Senate in 2021.

Her home of Jefferson is now in the 25th Legislative District due to redistricting.

A legislator since 2010, Bucco won a 2020 special election for State Senate with 54% of the vote; his 67,142 votes were the most cast for a Senate candidate since the implementation of the 40-district system in 1973. In 2021, he took in 57% of the vote.
Clarke stated that she has the support of the Morris County Democratic Chair Amalia Duarte, the Passaic County Democratic Chair John Currie, and the Democratic State Chairman LeRoy Jones, Jr.
Earlier this year, Duarte succeeded Chip Robinson as county chair, so this primary election will be her first in that role. It shows that she is willing to support candidates before the county convention decides who gets the organisation line.
Clarke is “a fighter and a dedicated worker who won’t only show up for photo opportunities but will also show up to serve residents,” as Duarte put it. Christine adds forward-thinking leadership to our campaign, which is something the district 25 needs.
In 2021, Clarke got 41% of the vote to State Sen. Joseph Pennacchio’s (R-Montville) 39%, while in 2019, Clarke received 5,631 less votes than Assemblyman Jay Webber.
