Chrissie Hynde Net Worth: Are Chrissie Hynde and Jim Kerr Still Married?

Christine Ellen “Chrissie” Hynde is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist with a net worth of $12 million. She is most known for being the lead singer of the Pretenders, a rock/new wave band.

Chrissie Hynde, the longtime frontman of The Pretenders, is one of the few female punk rockers to achieve popular success. Hynde is a product of the 1960s revolution: in 1970, she was a student at Kent State University when National Guard troops opened fire on protesters protesting the Vietnam War. She relocated to London and began writing a record and band reviews for the New Musical Express, as well as participating in the burgeoning punk music movement.

She founded her band in the late 1970s, and The Pretenders published their first album in 1980, which included the hit track “Brass in Pocket.” Two members of the band died in separate drug-related events in 1982, but Hynde continued her career with The Pretenders through the 1980s and 1990s with numerous lineups. In addition, Hynde is a well-known animal rights campaigner.

Hynde went to London in 1973 after three years of art school. Her art expertise helped her secure a job at an architectural firm, but she resigned after eight months. She then met rock journalist Nick Kent, who assisted her in landing a job at “NME,” a music magazine. Her job at the magazine didn’t last long, and she went to work for Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood’s clothes business, SEX.

Due to her wish to remain in London, she attempted to persuade two members of the Sex Pistols, whom she had met through McLaren’s management, to marry her. After this failed, she attempted to form a band in France but was forced to return to Cleveland in the mid-1970s.

The Pretenders

Hill recommended that she take her time forming a band. She quickly met bassist Pete Farndon, and the three of them decided on James Honeyman-Scott on guitar, vocals, and piano, Martin Chambers on drums and vocals, and Chris Hynde on guitar and lead vocals. They were known as the Pretenders.

In January of 1979, The Pretenders performed their first show at a club in Paris and released their first single. In July, they released a second single, both of which charted in the United Kingdom. The band debuted the song “Brass in Pocket” in November 1979, and it went to number one in the UK in January 1980, the same day their first album, “Pretenders,” was published.

The album was a worldwide success, and they followed it up with “Extended Play” and “Pretenders II.” Internal tragedy struck, however, as Honeyman-Scott died of an overdose two days after Farndon was fired from the band in 1982. The following year, Farndon died of an overdose as well. With Robert McIntosh on guitar and Malcolm Foster on bass, this was the first of several lineup changes for the band. However, these members would soon shift, with Hynde remaining the band’s lone constant and founding member throughout its existence.

The Pretenders have had multiple worldwide singles throughout their long career, including “Brass in Pocket,” “Talk of the Town,” “Back on the Chain Gang,” “2000 Miles,” “Don’t Get Me Wrong,” and “I’ll Stand by You.” From 1979 to 2020, the band published 11 albums and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
