Beanie Feldstein’s Role in The Broadway Revival of “Funny Girl” Will Be Filled by Lea Michele!

Lea Michele has been cast as Beanie Feldstein’s replacement following the revelation that Feldstein is quitting the Broadway revival of Funny Girl two months early.

Fanny Brice will be played by Michele, who previously performed in the original cast of Spring Awakening.

With effect from Friday, September 6, current standby Julie Benko will undertake the role of Michele, while Michele will officially take up the role on Thursday, September 8, with effect from Tuesday, August 2 through Thursday, September 4.

Michele’s former Glee co-star Jane Lynch will be replaced as Mrs. Brice by Tony nominee and Walking Dead actor Tovah Feldshuh. On September 6, Feldshuh will make her film debut with Michele in Funny Girl.

Due to this, Feldstein will be leaving the show early, as well as Lynch, after she was originally scheduled to play through September 25. In addition to Ramin Karimloo, who plays Nick Arnstein, and Jared Grimes, who was nominated for a Tony Award in 2022 for his performance as Eddie Ryan, Michele and Feldshuh will join the cast.

Fans had hoped that Michele would be cast when the revival was first announced last year, and the news comes as a surprise to many. In my mind, there is a notion that there are certain roles that I’d like to play.

They are, in fact. Nevertheless, she told ET last autumn that “I am really supportive of Beanie and [Spring Awakening director] Michael [Mayer] and Jane and this whole show.” “I think that everyone has been waiting for this show to return for so long,” Michele continued. “I’ve always been a tremendous fan.”

For Feldstein, leaving Fanny Brice was a “very painful decision” that she made on Sunday. Feldstein had previously told ET that the role of Fanny Brice was a “dream” role for her as a child. As she explained in her statement, she left the company since the production team was going on a different route.

Incredible Cast and Crew.

Beanie Feldstein's role in the Broadway revival of "Funny Girl" will be filled by Lea Michele.

Since I was a child, I wanted to play Fanny Brice on Broadway, and I’ve had the privilege to do it these past few months with much delight and honor. Feldstein had to make the painful decision to leave the show earlier than expected when the production opted to go in a new route.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank every single person who came to the August Wilson for the love and supports you have shown me and our incredible cast and crew. It’s been an honor and a privilege to bring Funny Girl to life on and off the stage, and I hope you’ll continue to join us on Henry Street after I leave on July 31st,” she said in a statement.
