A Woman From New Jersey Filed a Complaint Claiming That She Was Burned During Surgery Due to an Oxygen Supply Fire.

During a treatment to remove tumours two years ago, a 79-year-old woman from Essex County, New Jersey, claims that the oxygen supply caught fire, causing her to suffer severe burns.

According to court documents, the woman underwent surgery on March 15, 2021, at the Glen Ridge outpatient facility of the New York Bariatric Group to remove tumours from her right shoulder and the back of her neck.

The claim, filed on Wednesday in Superior Court in Essex County, states that after the removal of the tumours, she was placed on a nasal oxygen tube and the surgical personnel used an electric cauterising tool to close the wounds.

“There was a spark from the device that caused the oxygen to catch fire,” the lawsuit claims, describing what happened while doctors, nurses, and assistants cauterised the wounds.

The lawsuit also names Glen Ridge SurgiCenter, the surgeon, and many unnamed nurses and helpers involved in the procedure.

Glen Ridge SurgiCenter had a state licence to operate as a single-operating-room surgical facility when the accident occurred.

According to data from the New Jersey Department of Health, the center’s licence was no longer valid as of June 30, 2022. On Friday, callers who left messages in the center’s mailbox received no responses.

On Friday, a representative from New York Bariatric Group did not reply to a request for comment on the lawsuit. The company has locations in both New Jersey and New York.
