On Tuesday afternoon, a man was shot at a service area on the New Jersey Turnpike, prompting an investigation by the state’s Attorney General’s office.
At around 1:45 p.m., a man was shot “in the presence of law enforcement” in the Clara Barton service area on the southbound side of the NJ Turnpike, between Exits 2 and 1.
Not much is known about what transpired between the State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service officers involved in the incident. The Attorney General’s office was referred all questions by the State Police.
The investigation is being carried out per a directive from the Attorney General’s office that mandated an investigation into the use of force by a police officer.
The parking lot standoff
According to 1st State Update, a news outlet in Delaware, a homicide suspect had threatened to kill himself after being stopped by marshals.
A SWAT team appeared to be present in the parking lot, as evidenced by video captured at the scene.
The service area, as reported by the NJ DOT Turnpike Twitter account, closed to the public shortly after 10 a.m. and remained closed for the majority of the day.
