VP Harris Will Be in New Jersey on Monday to Speak at the Naacp National Conference

Kamala Harris, the first Black and first female vice president, will be in Atlantic City on Monday to speak at the NAACP’s annual conference.

Harris will speak at the 113th annual NAACP convention, which begins Thursday, before conducting a roundtable discussion with New Jersey state senators and others about maintaining abortion rights in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling.

The NAACP announced on social media that the keynote speech at 9:30 a.m. will be streamed live at NAACP.org.

According to a White House official who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the vice president’s address is part of an effort to showcase President Joe Biden’s administration’s successes ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.

She has also spoken to the National Education Association and the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials in recent weeks.

The conversation will be Harris’ latest push to emphasize abortion rights in reaction to the Supreme Court’s verdict and Republican-led state initiatives to restrict the practice, including in situations of rape, incest, or the mother’s health.

Harris is set to fly to Philadelphia on Saturday, and she just visited with state lawmakers in Orlando, Florida. The President issued an Executive Order Protecting Access to Reproductive Health Care Services last week, and the Administration is spearheading a whole-of-government response to the healthcare crisis.

Last week, Biden signed an executive order to preserve abortion rights, including access to FDA-approved drugs, emergency medical treatment, and contraception.

The government is also creating a team of attorneys eager to represent women who cross state boundaries to receive abortions that are illegal in their home states for free.
