Recent Storm Brought 11.6 Tonnes of Trash, Which Was Picked Up by the Ballona Creek Trash Interceptor

When it rains in Los Angeles, the only thing that flows into the ocean is rainwater; nevertheless, there are other things that flow in as well. In addition, tonnes of garbage is carried out to sea and end up in the Pacific.

But at least this year there is a smaller amount of work to be done. It was reported on Sunday by the Los Angeles County Public Works Department that the Trash Interceptor located in Ballona Creek had collected 11.6 tonnes of plastic, rubbish, and debris during the course of the weekend.

The Ballona Creek Trash Interceptor is an automated, solar-powered trash collector that was developed by the Dutch charitable organization known as The Ocean Cleanup.

Its purpose is to collect pieces of trash and plastic that are floating on the water’s surface before they make their way into the ocean.

It is located at the mouth of Ballona Creek in Marina del Rey, and it functions with moorings that are attached to the jetties of the waterway that is adjacent to it.

The county installed a second trash boom on the interceptor the previous Wednesday in preparation for the most recent storm, which has been responsible for dumping 7 inches of rain on Los Angeles since the previous Wednesday.
