A truck driver for the Elizabeth Board of Education in Union County was arrested last month for allegedly having a “ghost gun” and three loaded ammo magazines on school grounds, as well as several other weapons at his home.

Evers, 44, of Linden, faces a number of weapons charges, such as illegal possession at an educational institution and possession of a large-capacity ammunition device. Court papers say that Evers was taken into custody on November 29.

Armed with a search warrant, police allegedly found more weapons, ammunition, and things that could cause damage at his house.
An affidavit of probable cause says that when police went to the house, they found two hand grenades, three silencers, a fully automatic ghost machine gun, a banned assault gun, and more magazines with bullets of different sizes.
The affidavit says that when police searched the house, they found books and papers that told them how to make explosives, silencers, and changes to weapons that would make them fully automatic.
“Tactical items and clothing were also found,” the affidavit says. “These included a ballistic vest with SWAT and FBI symbols, a jacket with FBI patches on both sleeves, badges, and several pairs of handcuffs.”

At a board of education meeting this week, school officials said that Evers was fired from his job without pay.
“The public should know that the person is in jail and that the district is taking steps to fire him in accordance with state law and district policy,” a spokesman for Elizabeth schools Pat Politano told NJ Advance Media.
The second statement of probable cause says that a coworker saw a gun in a black bag that Evers was carrying around school property.
“The employee decided to tell security because she thought the defendant might use the handgun and because he works in schools with children.” So says the affidavit.
According to the affidavit, the worker made an anonymous call to a security officer at the Elizabeth Board of Education and said that Evers had three handguns.
The affidavit says that a security officer for the board of education saw Evers park a district delivery truck with the back facing the side door of a building.

The affidavit says that once Evers was inside the school, the security officer saw what he thought was a gun bag on the center console of the unlocked truck.
“He then looked inside the bag and made sure that there was at least one handgun and loaded magazines inside,” the affidavit says. The affidavit says that each magazine, which was kept in a pouch, had 15 rounds of 9mm bullets.
Evers was put in jail until a court hearing on February 1, 2023. Evers does not have a lawyer, according to court and jail records.
