Ny Gov. Hochul’s Housing and Tax Ideas Worry Democrats: ‘extinctions’

Several Long Island Democrats are worried that Governor Hochul’s controversial plans to boost the MTA payroll levy and overturn municipal zoning restrictions could cost them their seats, with one lawmaker comparing them to “extinction-level occurrences.”

In order to fund the MTA, the Democratic governor’s plan includes raising a payroll tax on city-area firms by $800 million each year.

Taking this action is an attempt to make up for the decline in passengers and revenue that has occurred since the COVID-19 outbreak.

There is another plan getting considerable attention that would give a state body the power to override local zoning choices if local towns fail to reach the state’s housing targets.

Levittown Democrat Kevin Thomas and Brentwood Democrat Monica Martinez both believe housing policy decisions should be made at the city or county level.

Assemblymember Michaelle Solages of Elmont, another Democrat in the state legislature, has remarked, “We need to make sure we’re not implementing laws that take powerfully out of the wheelhouse of communities.”

Assemblyman Fred Thiele, a Democrat from Sag Harbor, commented to Newsday that both plans were “extinction-level events” for Democrats on Long Island.

The Hochul camp has been sought out by Fox News Digital for comment.

Early this month, Governor Hochul revealed her proposed $227 billion state budget, accompanied by a dire economic forecast.

In addition to a proposed revision of state bail law, which is likely to be met with resistance by liberal state politicians, the sweeping spending plan also includes a boost in tuition for public universities and a 10% increase in school aid.

Hochul has stated that the stability of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates subways and other forms of public transit in the downstate area, and the care for incoming migrants are two of the state’s most important challenges.

“MTA contributes to the economic vitality of New York City, which in turn helps propel the state’s economy. Thus, it is of the utmost significance to us all “During Hochul’s budget speech, she made this statement.

Numerous initiatives, such as allocating $1 billion to fund psychiatric beds and services for people with mental illnesses and a plan to spur the creation of 800,000 new homes in part by changing zoning rules, were announced in the Democratic governor’s State of the State address last month and are included in the spending plan.

The Democratic-controlled legislature (the House and Senate) has until mid-March to submit alternative budget plans.
