As they enter their fourth year without a contract, New Jersey Transit engineers are beginning to discuss a possible walkout.The engineers stated that they are paying the price for the fact that other commuter railroads pay significantly higher wages.
Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen union leaders believe that NJ Transit will not negotiate.
In contrast, the agency stated in a statement that it is “currently engaged in active and continuous mediation” and that it has reached agreements with all of its unions except for the BLET.
A complex set of federal regulations regarding railroad strikes makes it unlikely that a strike would occur soon, notwithstanding the threat.
