The new K-9 officer for the Carmel Police Department in Putnam County is named Pietro, in honor of Officer Gary Pietropaolo, who was killed in a motorcycle accident while off duty on June 7, 2018.
Pietropaolo, police say, would lift the spirits of his fellow officers with his infectious enthusiasm for law enforcement and commitment to helping the community every time he arrived for work.
“When Gary arrived, we’d all hear the door slam and feel the rush of air as it passed us in the corridor. He would sprint into the structure “This is what law enforcement in Carmel has reported.

Officer Vincent DeSantola, one of the many young, zealous policemen appointed by the department since Pietropaolo’s death, reportedly hoped to revive the department’s K-9 squad.
Police said that Gary Pietropaolo Sr., Gary’s father, and a retired Yonkers police sergeant, stepped in to help DeSantola reestablish the K-9 unit and even assisted the young officer in choosing a dog.
As of this writing, Carmel Police say that their chosen canine, Pietro, will begin working for them on Wednesday, December 14.
Officer Pietro is excited to meet everyone, the Carmel Police Department said.
