Two New Jersey historic sites have been awarded matching grants from the federal government totaling $1,000,000 to fund restoration projects in advance of the nation’s approaching Semiquincentennial festivities.
The Indian King Tavern in Haddonfield and the Wallace House in Somerville both received assistance from the National Park Service so that they could be restored.

While the state is responsible for over 50 historic sites, many have been underfunded for years,
and funding for state parks as a whole has been relatively stagnant. The number of tourists interested in the country’s history and culture is likely to rise as the 250th anniversary of its founding in 2026 draws near.
John Cecil, New Jersey’s assistant commissioner for state parks, woods, and historic sites, said in a statement, “Both of these locations hold the heritage of crucial times in New Jersey’s and our country’s history and formation as a free nation.”
According to the Department of Environmental Protection, the primary goal of the restoration work in Camden County will be to stabilize the bar by making necessary masonry and plaster repairs and painting the inside and exterior.

the Wallace House in Somerset County will receive financing to replace its roof, improve its rainwater drainage system, restore its windows and foundation, and fix its soffit and chimney. During a military encampment in the area during the winter of 1778-79,
George Washington used the rural mansion of Philadelphia merchant John Wallace as his headquarters. Seven million dollars worth of funding came from the National Park Service and was given to 17 different preservation projects throughout 12 different states.
