In accordance with ESPN’s reporting, on Friday, an order was sent to all New Jersey bookmakers prohibiting wagering on the Citrus Bowl matchup between Purdue and LSU due to the fact that “some individual linked with the Purdue Football team” is in breach of state regulations. Retired NFL quarterback Drew Brees apparently fits that description.
Purdue officially introduced Brees as an interim assistant coach for the Boilermakers on December 15 as the team prepared for the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
Brees played for the team for three years before entering the NFL in 2001. After Jeff Brohm left for Louisville, Ryan Walters, the former Illinois defensive coordinator, became the new head coach at Purdue.
The opportunity to coach for his alma institution sounded like a good one, but it became clouded by Brees’ commercial ties with the sportsbook PointsBet during the Citrus Bowl.

In 2021, he signed on as a PointsBet brand ambassador and was given a financial stake in the company. PointsBet, however, no longer works with Brees owing to his affiliation with Purdue.

In a statement made on December 22nd, PointsBet expressed its delight at the appointment of Drew Brees as Interim Assistant Coach for the Purdue Boilermakers. Despite the fact that this is a hugely exciting new chapter in Drew’s career, we have made the difficult decision to terminate our ambassador engagement deal with him.
This choice will allow us to keep our commitment to “regulatory and legal compliance, responsible gaming practises, and the integrity of regulated sports betting.
We hope Drew enjoys his time back at his old mater.
