Dana Marie Perino was born on May 9, 1972, in Evanston, Wyoming, to Janice and Leo Perino. She grew up in the state of Colorado, in the city of Denver.
Growing up in Denver, she attended Ponderosa High School before transferring to Colorado State University-Pueblo. Perino earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Colorado State University in the mid-1990s.
She became interested in other initiatives while at university and began working as a host for many shows on public affairs and politics for several University stations.
At the same time, Perino was allowed to join the college’s forensic team and work at KTSC-TV, a Rocky Mountain PBS station. Perino then attended the University of Illinois at Springfield, where she got a Master’s Degree in Public Affairs.
Dana Perino’s Career
Perino’s political career began immediately after she moved to Washington, D.C. when she began working as a staff assistant for Rep. Scott McInnis. She went on to serve as the press secretary for Rep. Dan Schaefer, where she stayed for four years. Perino and her husband, Peter McMahon, relocated to the United Kingdom in 1998. The couple returned to Washington in late 2001.
She rose to prominence again in 2001 when she was appointed as the Department of Justice’s spokesperson. After nearly two years in this capacity, she was promoted to Associate Director of Communications for the White House Council on Environmental Quality.
With this post, she began to attract some attention while also strengthening her media ties and outreach. Perino was hired by White House Chief of Staff Andy Card two months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. That was the turning moment in her career, and she received her highest profile to date.
She served as Deputy Press Secretary from 2005 to 2007, and then as Press Secretary from 2007 to 2009 until Bush’s term ended in 2009.

In late 2009, she drew the attention of President Barack Obama, who offered her a position on the Broadcasting Board of Directors, which she accepted, with Senate approval in June 2010.
The following year, it was revealed that Perino would be serving as an Editorial Director in the Crown Publishing Group, a division of Random House, Inc’s books label Crown Forum, though she left after a few years.

Perino collaborated with Chris Stirewalt in 2016 to launch the podcast Perino & Stirewalt: I’ll Tell You What. Stirewalt was fired from Fox News after the 2020 presidential election; before, the podcast was a weekly series.
