A 15-year-old New York City Boy Was Shot in the Head by His Older Brother, and He Later Passed Away From His Wounds

After the death of a 15-year-old boy who was shot in his Staten Island apartment earlier this month, authorities on Tuesday identified the shooter as the victim’s elder brother.

At 11 p.m. on February 16, Steven Estevez was shot in the head on the second floor of a building on Thompson Street near Wright Street in Stapleton Heights. The shooting is being examined as a possible accident.

His condition at Richmond University Hospital was initially described as critical after he was brought there.

Authorities said he died the following day, but the Staten Island Advance cites unnamed sources saying he was taken off life support last week.

David Estevez, his 17-year-old brother, was detained at 9:30 p.m. on February 17 and charged with assault and firearms possession, according to authorities.

On Tuesday, a witness who was home at the time of the shooting told The Post that she heard the elder boy screaming for help.

“I heard the pistol go off and then I heard the thump and I heard, ‘Oh my God, oh my God!'” remembered the neighbor, who wanted not to be identified.

Everyone in the area dialed 911. Earlier, I observed David descending the stairs to speak with the authorities. To paraphrase, he pleaded for assistance. He’s still alive and well up there. Join us in the loft.

On Tuesday, authorities speculated that the shooting may have been unintentional, but they did not release any further information.

I think David is really afraid and sorry,” the neighbor remarked. In my opinion, he didn’t set out to achieve that.

She said the uncles would monitor the kids while their mother was at work and “let them do whatever the heck they wanted to do.”

She claimed that on the night of the shooting, the boys had friends around and were listening to drill music, as was their custom when their mother was at work.

“I saw them from kindergarten all the way through high school,” she continued. They’ve been inseparable for as long as I can remember. Their social circles overlapped to an extreme degree. David constantly watched out for Steven while the two of them were together.

There was a strong sense of brotherhood and camaraderie.

According to the Staten Island Advance, a source familiar with the inquiry said the older sibling claimed he shot his brother inadvertently while playing with a silver gun.

The source claims that he then hid the gun, probably out of fear.

According to the judicial records, David Estevez was arraigned and subsequently ordered to be kept without bail after entering a not-guilty plea. On March 6th, he will be back in court.

It was unclear right away if the charges against him would be strengthened.

The Legal Aid Society, which is defending him, has described the fatal occurrence as “very unfortunate.”

In a statement, the firm asked the public to “refrain from making premature conclusions” and “respect the family’s privacy” while they grieved. After careful consideration and examination, “we will have more to say about this situation in the coming days, weeks, and months.”

The Advance said that the murdered teenager was a student at McKee-Staten Island Technical High School and a member of the school’s junior varsity football team.
