Xbox Ceo Phil Spencer Would Want to See Call of Duty on The Nintendo Switch

The most recent Call of Duty game from Activision will be released this week, and while there won’t be a Nintendo release, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer has talked about bringing the well-known first-person shooter franchise to the Switch.

According to Spencer, Microsoft may approach the series like Minecraft and make it available on as “many different screens” as possible, including Switch, when the Activision Blizzard merger is finalized. Spencer made this comment in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal (via The Verge senior editor, Tom Warren).

On Play Station, Call of Duty Will Be Available Specifically

“On PlayStation, Call of Duty will be available specifically. I’d love to play it on the Switch, and I’d want to play it on a variety of screens.

To treat CoD like Minecraft is our goal.

Phil’s remarks follow up on an earlier CNBC interview with Microsoft President Brad Smith, who also suggested that if the acquisition went through, the American tech giant would prefer to bring the Call of Duty franchise on Switch.

The availability of top games like Call of Duty from Activision Blizzard today on the Sony PlayStation will remain a priority for us as we move forward with the regulatory assessment of this purchase.

We Want to Make It Available on Nintendo Platforms

“We want to make it available on Nintendo platforms. We want to make sure that Activision’s other top games are available on Nintendo as well as PlayStation so that they can continue to be played there. At the time, Smith cited Minecraft as another illustration of Microsoft’s continuous support for alternative platforms.

Naturally, Microsoft must first finish buying Activision Blizzard in order to move forward with this. The transaction is still being finalized. At this rate, if Call of Duty does return to Nintendo consoles, it will probably be on a next-generation console.

The Wii U generation saw Call of Duty’s last appearance on a Nintendo console with the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops II in 2012 and Call of Duty: Ghosts in 2013.
