An Emergency Room Backlog Due to The Worst Flu Season in Decades

The Philadelphia CBS affiliate reports: Many more people are falling ill as the worst flu season in a decade continues. According to the CDC, 13 million Americans have contracted the flu since October. The CDC also saw an increase in reports of other respiratory infections.

There are long lines at hospitals’ emergency rooms and patients often have to wait hours to be seen. Officials fear that the holiday season may bring an increase in the “tripledemic” of influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, and swine influenza virus (SIV).

Doctor Thomas Brabson, the head of AtlantiCare’s emergency services, said, “We’re seeing a number of people that are coming in with flu-like conditions.”

We have a severe shortage of hospital beds as people get sick and crowd them. New Jersey has one of the highest rates of influenza cases in the country, according to the CDC’s map.

More than 44,000 cases have been confirmed by laboratories since October, but physicians say the true number is much higher because most people do not get tested.

People are “letting their guard down” because they are “going out and about a lot more,” according to Brabson.

The number of children hospitalised with RSV, a respiratory infection, continues to rise. In her words, “this past year has been unlike any other years in the past,” Dr. Laura Pusley remarked.

RSV is on the rise at the same time that influenza and COVID-19 infections are. The tri-state area is once again red on the CDC’s COVID-19 community transmission map, which indicates widespread infection.

In the last two weeks, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 has increased by 50% in New Jersey, 39% in Pennsylvania, and 65% in Delaware.

Brabson remarked, “There are some extreme cases.

Wearing masks and keeping up-to-date on vaccines are two ways to curb the spread of three viral diseases currently sweeping the country, say doctors. However, only around one-fifth of U.S. adults have had the new COVID-19 vaccination.

It tells me that people are not getting the message,” Dr. Douglas Chiriboga remarked. Since overcrowding is becoming a problem in some areas, doctors are advising patients to only visit emergency rooms if they are having problems breathing or another life-threatening emergency.

Even if you only have a fever and congestion, you should still stay home and call your doctor.

You want them riveted from the first word, page, or sentence, no matter how painful or unpleasant, and that's my expertise.
