For refusing to comply with the House January 6 committee’s probe, Peter Navarro was indicted by a federal grand jury for contempt of Congress. He said that prosecutors were employing “hardball” tactics by arresting him at an airport and refusing to let him make a phone call at his Friday court appearance in Washington, DC.
Arrested on his way to Nashville on Friday, Navarro claims he was detained at the DC-area airport. For his failure to submit papers requested by the committee and for his absence from summoned testimony in front of House investigators, he faces two counts of contempt of court.

When the select committee’s subpoena from February was not honored, the House decided in April to send Navarro to the Justice Department for prosecution.

The Committee for Governmental Reform.
He is the second former Trump aide to be prosecuted for criminal contempt of Congress for violating a subpoena issued by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on January 6.
An indictment has been handed down as a result of a referral from the House of Representatives involving former Trump strategist Steve Bannon.
A criminal trial is scheduled for this summer. The Department of Justice informed the committee on Friday that it will not indict former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and former deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino, two other Trump loyalists who were submitted for prosecution.
Democrats in the House and others on the left have criticized the Justice Department’s handling of the January 6 investigation, particularly as it relates to Trump and his associates’ efforts to rescind the election and to perpetrate the massive voter fraud that sparked a violent assault on the Capitol.

is prohibited from possessing firearms or explosives, and must obtain pre-approval for travel outside the United States. His next court date is June 17th. Non-cooperation should be the primary focus. His non-compliance with the House investigation is the center of the new charges against Navarro.
Specifically, the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia has issued a subpoena to obtain “any records relevant to the subpoena dated February 9, 2022, that you received from the House Select Committee to examine January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.” To back up their claims that Navarro deliberately ignored the subpoena, the prosecution includes in the indictment evidence of the committee repeatedly rejecting his arguments.
As the indictment quotes from an email sent on February 27, committee members expressed their belief that they could discuss some matters “without any raising executive privilege concerns at all.

Executive privilege concerns must be asserted question-by-question throughout the deposition, the committee instructed. Prior to this year’s criminal referral of Navarro, the committee charged him with making no effort to comply with their subpoena request, alleging that Trump had invoked executive privilege in the subject and that he had made it plain that he was unable to assist with the committee.
Navarro Rejected the Committee’s Offer.
Rep. Bennie Thompson, the chair of the House Select Committee on Executive Privilege, used this argument in Navarro’s contempt hearing.
“The fact that they worked for the government at the time means they can ignore the fact that they may have played a role in an attack on American democracy.
What they’re saying is that “In reference to Navarro and Scavino, Thompson said this at the time: “Nobody is fooled by their ruses. For our investigation, they must comply. They haven’t agreed to do so. As if that wasn’t bad enough, this is a crime.”
But Navarro rejected the committee’s offer to address topics that were outside the scope of the privilege, and he was expelled from the meeting. On top of that, Navarro enquired about whether or not the meeting would be open to the public. When it came time to shut the committee out of communication, he simply said, “I’m not talking to you anymore.”

what Is Navarro’s Decision?
Prosecutors had requested records connected to Navarro’s decision, which he revealed on Monday. Navarro said in an appearance with MSNBC Thursday night that he “responded” to the Justice Department, but he would specify whether he would hand up the requested information. Republicans are threatened with reprisals should they lose.
It was reported that when asked by Ari Melber on MSNBC about his plans to bring charges against former Vice President Joe Biden and other Democratic leaders, Navarro claimed he would “lead the charge.”
Navarro responded, “You bet you a** that I’ll lead the charge..” To wit, “I’ll take Adam Schiff as well as Nancy Pelosi and Rosa DeLauro—all of those clowns and kangaroos—I’ll take Biden and every single senior staff member in there, too.”
What Navarro Advised.
“And what are you going to do?” Melber stepped in to fill the void. A subpoena is what Navarro advised.
For Biden‘s crimes in Ukraine, the southern border, and elsewhere, “we’ll begin by impeaching him and subpoenaing his senior staff,” he says. If Navarro were to return to the White House under a Republican government, would he “use the Department of Justice to subpoena Democrats that he doesn’t like?” Melber asked.
For his part, Rep. Mauricio Navarro declared, “I will do everything I can so that the Democrats can try to throw me in prison for my stand on the right side of the law.” “We’ll play right back whatever game they choose to play. If they hit us, we’ll attack them much harder in response. Ari, that’s not what I want. Let’s be crystal clear about this. That is not anything I desire.”
A former Trump White House aide who worked on Trump’s efforts to change the election results in 2020 has been indicted for the first time as part of the Jan. 6 probe. Former White House strategist Steve Bannon was charged with two counts of contempt of Congress last year for his refusal to comply with the subpoena issued by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Trial Dates.
Trial dates have been set for July. However, it is extremely unusual for the Justice Department to bring criminal charges against both Bannon and Navarro at the same time. It’s the Department of Justice’s latest attempt to help the select committee.
For one thing, it is a politically explosive matter that ties into congressional subpoenas, presidential privilege, and lengthy DOJ internal rule based on White House aides’ immunity from testifying under compulsion.
