Joni Mitchell returned to the stage at the Newport Folk Festival on Sunday, and it was a joyous occasion. The 78-year-old singer of “Both Sides Now” performed her first complete gig since the early 2000s with Brandi Carlile and friends. It’s also a huge accomplishment coming after she was temporarily unable to walk or talk due to a brain aneurysm.
While Wynonna Judd, Holly Laessig of Lucius, Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons, and others had been expecting Carlile, 41, to appear at this year’s event, Mitchell’s appearance came as a complete surprise. While Mitchell sang “Both Sides Now” from 1966, Judd was spotted wiping away tears as her return to the stage seemed to awaken a well of emotions in him.
