Mattei displayed graphs demonstrating how Jones’ social media viewer engagement increased every time he mentioned the shooting on his Infowars platform, sometimes by more than 50%, even though “these families were drowning in grief.” Jones claimed that between 2012 and 2018, 550 million people watched his claims about the shooting on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube combined.
Mattei challenged the jury to calculate how much one person would be owed for a single lie and multiply that amount by 550 million. He suggested that each of the lawsuit’s 15 plaintiffs should receive that sum. To the jurors, Mattei stated, “Your task is to make sure he appreciates the damage he has caused.”
