The Springsteen Archive is Hosting a Woody Guthrie Show Focusing on His New Jersey Roots.

All 50 states were represented in Woody Guthrie’s music, but he had a special tie to the Garden State.

The event will go more into this link and others tonight at 7:30. Nora Guthrie, Woody Guthrie’s daughter, and Bob Santelli, the executive director of the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music, will be speaking and signing copies of their books on Thursday, December 1, at 7 p.m., in the Great Hall Auditorium on the campus of Monmouth University in West Long Branch.

In the 1930s, Guthrie performed for the longshoremen in Elizabeth and Newark, as stated by Santelli. He frequented New Jersey, so I can say that.

The legendary “Dust Bowl Ballads” album by Woody Guthrie was recorded in 1940 in the Camden studios of Victor Records.

Years later, in the ’60s, when Guthrie was ill with Huntington’s illness, he was admitted to Greystone Park State Hospital in Morris Plains.

A well-known person, such as Bob Dylan, paid him a visit.

In the words of Santelli, “every weekend he would come over and serenade Woody Guthrie with a song.”

In attendance was Nora Guthrie, who, along with Santelli, co-authored the recently released book Woody Guthrie: Songs and Art, Words and Wisdom.

Santelli predicted, “She’ll relate that narrative.” In addition to being a beautiful human being, there are many fascinating aspects to this woman.

Nora Guthrie and Santelli have put together a book called “Woody Guthrie: Songs and Art, Words and Wisdom” that features a selection of Woody Guthrie’s writings and artwork.

This collection of essays won 2022 Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Book Award from the ASCAP Foundation and has contributions from Chuck D, presidential historian Douglas Brinkley, and folk singer Arlo Guthrie.

Santelli and Guthrie, founder of the Woody Guthrie Archives, will be in conversation with Michael Thomas, an English professor at Monmouth University.

The university’s Shadow Lawn mansion served as the location for the 1982 film adaptation of “Annie,” and is now home to the Great Hall Auditorium. Lot 14, which can be reached from Norwood Avenue via Route 71, is a free parking option.

On January 6, 2023, the Vogel theatre at the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank will play host to “An Evening with David Sancious,” presented by the Archives.

In addition to Sancious, Living Colour’s drummer and multiple Grammy winner Will Calhoun will be performing with them.

Sancious is a musician that has performed with countless legendary artists, including his former bandmates in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. The cheapest available tickets are $49 each. More details can be found at thebasie.org.
