Season 5 Premiere Date for the Handmaid’s Tale

Season 5 Trailer for The Handmaid’s Tale

The full trailer for the upcoming season has been released by Hulu. The clip begins with June and Luke in Canada, dealing with the aftermath of Commander Waterford’s murder. Gilead warns June that she will not get away with the crime.

But it appears that the real showdown this season will be between June and Serena. “I want her to know it was me, the bereaved wife,” June says. “She is aware that the entire world is watching.” The teaser contrasts Serena in a black mourning veil with the former handmaid on the run in Canada. They come face to face at one point when June reaches for a gun behind her back…

We don’t know what will happen next, but the stakes appear to be higher than ever for June. Will she make it out alive? Why are we able to see her and Luke talking through the prison glass? And could we finally see Gilead fall? Let’s hope Season 5 provides us with the answers we seek.

The Plot of the Handmaid’s Tale Season 5

Previous seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale will be spoiled!

Hulu has confirmed that The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 will pick up after the season 4 finale’s dramatic events. In case you need a quick refresher, June and other Gilead survivors murdered Fred Waterford in the woods.

The official logline for the fifth season is: “June faces repercussions for the murder of Commander Waterford while she struggles to redefine her identity and purpose. As Gilead’s influence spreads into Canada, widowed Serena attempts to increase her visibility in Toronto. Commander Lawrence collaborates with Aunt Lydia to reform Gilead and ascend to power. June, Luke, and Moira continue their mission to rescue and reunite with Hannah while fighting Gilead at a distance.”

Samira Wiley, star of the play Moira, stated on The View (opens in a new window): “We are continuing exactly where we left off. Everyone who watched the season finale is aware of Commander Waterford’s fate. So June is, as usual, in a bit of trouble.” She also confirmed that June will remain in Canada in the new season as she determines how to bring down Gilead from there.

Moss teased the following to TVLine: “I would say that this season has been one of the craziest rides we’ve ever had.

There have been seasons where, you know, a great deal has transpired. Some seasons are slower than others. I’m having trouble keeping up with [season 5]. And it’s not empty rhetoric. I literally cannot keep up with the amount of activity that is occurring.”

We’ll also be getting closer to The Testaments, the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. Hulu has confirmed they will adapt the novel, which takes place ten years after the first book. Hulu’s head of scripted originals, Jordan Helman, has previously discussed its relationship to The Handmaid’s Tale. “The birth of The Testaments on Hulu and the eventual end of The Handmaid’s Tale are related,” he told Deadline.

The Handmaid’s Tale Cast for Season 5

Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale will likely feature the return of the majority of the series’ main cast. This means that we can anticipate the return of Moss as June, alongside Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, O-T Fagbenle as Luke, Max Minghella as Nick, Wiley as Moira, Bradley Whitford as Commander Lawrence, Brugel as Rita, Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Waterford, and Madeline Brewer as Janine.

We also anticipate the return of some of the new characters introduced in season 4. Mckenna Grace is believed to be returning as Mrs. Keyes after making an impression in Gilead. The actress is well-known for her leading role in the Sabrina reboot on Netflix.

After the gruesome death of Commander Waterford in season 4, Joseph Fiennes’s role on the show will likely be diminished. However, he may return in flashbacks, as showrunner Bruce Miller teased in an interview with Entertainment Weekly: “I would die if I didn’t see Joe [Fiennes] again.”

Alexis Bledel, who portrayed the former handmaid Emily Malek in seasons 1-4, will no longer be a part of the cast. She announced her departure in a statement to Entertainment Weekly (opens in a new tab). Bledel said: “I felt compelled to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time after much deliberation. I will be eternally grateful to Bruce Miller for penning such authentic and resonant scenes for Emily, as well as to Hulu, MGM, the cast, and crew for their support.”
