The increase in SNAP payments by 15 percent that took effect in January 2022 has been extended to at least January 2023.

These supplementary benefits are meant to assist with meeting the nutritional requirements of those affected by the continuing Covid-19 epidemic.

The New Jersey Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides nutrition assistance to approximately 900,000 people in over 419,000 households, with each family receiving a monthly SNAP payment depending on their size and income.

Federal public health emergency funding was first made available in January 2020 and has been renewed every 90 days since then. The most recent renewal was announced on October 13; there will likely be at least one more extension.

Due to the decentralized nature of SNAP’s administration, individual states also have a role. The decision to continue the supplemental payments is made on a monthly basis by each individual state. Only 13 states, New Jersey included, have announced extensions this month.
