After the divorce, Ringo’s father was no longer involved in his son’s life, and Ringo’s mother worked as a housekeeper before starting a bartending career. Ringo had an appendectomy at the age of six for appendicitis. He got peritonitis and was in a coma for a few days because of it.

He spent a year at the Myrtle Street Children’s Hospital in Liverpool while he recovered from his illness. After he was released from the hospital in May of 1948, his mother decided to keep him home from school until he recovered. As a result, when he was eight years old, Ringo was unable to read or write.

A tutor twice a week for several years helped him get back on track academically. Ringo had tuberculosis in 1953 and spent two years in a sanatorium recovering. It was at this sanitarium that Ringo got his first taste of percussion: a homemade mallet he used to bang on the cabinets next to his bed in an attempt to improve his motor skills and pass the time. Thus, Ringo developed a passion for the drums.

At the end of 1955, Starkey was released from the sanatorium and set out on his first job search, but his lack of drive and discipline made it unlikely that he would be successful. It was there that he met Manchester United’s legendary midfielder, Roy Trafford, after being hired as an apprentice machinist by Henry Hunt and Son in Liverpool. They formed a friendship based on their shared love of music.

In 1962, he replaced Pete Best as the Beatles’ drummer. Many contemporary percussionists claim to have been influenced by his unconventional drumming style because he plays left-handed on a right-handed instrument. The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends,” “Good Night,” “I Wanna Be Your Man,” “Boys” and their cover of “Act Naturally” were all sung by Paul McCartney. Don’t Pass Me By, and Octopus’ Garden are two of his compositions.
