In the course of New Jersey’s history, we’ve had our fair share of bad actors. Among all the stories, some stand out for their heinousness. These names have been permanently etched into the soul of our state.
Richard Kuklinski
Richard Kuklinski was convicted of the 1988 and 2003 murders of four North Jersey residents. Kuklinski claimed to be a mafia hitman whose total number of victims exceeded 100. During an autopsy of one of Kuklinski’s victims, the Medical Examiner discovered ice crystals in the body, which led to him being dubbed “The Iceman.” In 1988, Kuklinski was convicted of two murders and pleaded guilty to a further two. Kuklinski has been featured in multiple documentaries. Kuklinski died in 2006 in Trenton.
JoAnne Chesimard
Joanne Chesimard is wanted for escaping while serving a life sentence for murder in a Clinton, New Jersey, prison. Two New Jersey State Police troopers stopped Chesimard and two accomplices for a motor vehicle violation on the New Jersey Turnpike on May 2, 1973. Chesimard was a member of the revolutionary extremist organisation known as the Black Liberation Army.
Chesimard was wanted at the time for her involvement in multiple felonies, including bank robbery. Chesimard and her accomplices fired upon the soldiers. One soldier was shot and wounded, while the other was executed at point-blank range. Chesimard fled the scene but was apprehended later. The shootout resulted in the death of one of her accomplices, while the other was apprehended and remains in custody.Joanne Chesimard remains a fugitive from justice to this day.
Charles Cullen
In the 1990s, Charles Cullen was involved in another disturbing murder case. Charles was a nurse who probably should have activated the alarms much sooner. The police were not contacted until a vigilant Pharmacist Assistant became suspicious of a string of deaths caused by Digoxin and Insulin overdoses on the same ward.
Cullen ultimately pled guilty to the deaths of 29 patients under his care and the attempted murders of 6 others. He was sentenced to eleven life sentences in succession. Authorities are unable to prove that Cullen was responsible for over 400 additional deaths, but they believe he was.
Charles Cullen is currently incarcerated at the Trenton State Prison.
