N.J. Will Soon Have Personalised Licence Plates Honouring Historically Black Fraternities.

Monday, Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill allowing New Jersey to produce licence plates for a historically Black fraternity.

Specialized Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity licence plates will be available to honour the second-oldest existing historically Black collegiate Greek Letter Fraternity, according to the governor’s office. It will display the early 1900s-era design of the fraternity.

Phil Murphy said in a statement, “I am pleased to sign legislation authorising the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to issue special licence plates to the distinguished members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.”

“Kappa Alpha Psi has stood for progress, equality, and brotherhood for 112 years,” he added. As a member of the Divine Nine, it has been a national leader in large and small community service efforts, and its members have made invaluable contributions to every aspect of society.

According to the law, there is a $50 application fee and a $10 annual renewal fee for each licence plate. Once the cost of implementing the new plates has been recouped, the surplus funds will be deposited into a Kappa Alpha Psi License Plate Fund for the benefit of the fraternity.

“It is gratifying that the state of New Jersey recognises the significance and impact of Kappa Alpha Psi and all Black Greek letter organisations, which we affectionately refer to as The D9,” said Reuben A. Shelton III, the 34th grand polemarch and international president and chief executive officer of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

“The foundation of Kappa is community service and civic engagement. Shelton stated, “We pledge to assist the governor and the state of New Jersey in all efforts to advance the welfare of its citizens.”

The state legislature passed the bill (A978) with overwhelming support, 39-0 in the Senate and 79-0 in the Assembly.
