The U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, Philip R. Sellinger, said on Wednesday that a New Jersey man who used telephone dating services to swindle women and then evaded federal authorities has been sentenced to 66 months in prison.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Atlantic City resident Patrick Giblin, 58, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and fleeing from the custody of the Attorney General in U.S. District Court.
Authorities say Giblin escaped from prison on July 23, 2020, while serving time for offences related to the phone frauds. He was being transferred from a penitentiary in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania to a halfway house in Newark, where he was scheduled to spend the remainder of his sentence.

In 2017, the defendant was sentenced for promoting illegal behaviour in connection with the dating scam by going to another state and using a facility located in another state.

U.S. Marshals nabbed him on March 10, 2021, in Atlantic City, so the story goes. Officials say he began scamming women again in April 2019 while he was still in prison, and he did so until his arrest in March 2021.
In his ads on phone dating sites, he allegedly promised ladies he would move there so they could have a love relationship with him. It was eventually revealed that he had acquired funds from these women using interstate money wire firms.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Giblin was also sentenced to three years of supervised release and must pay $23,428 in restitution.
