The Suspect in The Jackson State Homicide Says a Fight Was Sparked by Doughnuts

When you say “Jackson, Miss. (WJTV),” do you mean “Jackson, Mississippi”? A New Orleans man who is being held on murder charges says he acted in self-defense when he shot and killed a fellow JSU student.

Flynn Brown, a 22-year-old New Jersey native, was discovered dead in a parked car on the JSU campus on Friday, December 2. A bullet to the skull ended his life instantly. 20-year-old Randall Smith from New Orleans was arrested.

Subsequently, murder charges were brought against Smith. On Monday, December 5th, he first appeared in Hinds County Court. Bond was denied, and a public defender was assigned to represent him in court.

On Thursday, December 15, during a preliminary hearing, Smith claimed he killed Brown in self-defense. Smith claims that Brown has stolen from him in the past, including taking his meals and personal items.

The situation became more heated after he claimed that Brown had stolen doughnuts from his hand. In an act of self-defense, he allegedly shot Brown after being choked by him until he couldn’t breathe.

A preliminary hearing for Smith was held on Thursday, and he was issued a $200,000 bond and 270 days of GPS tracking. The law forbids him from having a firearm or leaving the country without permission. His bond will be cancelled if he breaks any of the stipulations.
