In New Mexico, 4 Persons Were Dead When a Sheriff’s Helicopter Crashed

According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department, four persons aboard a sheriff’s department helicopter perished in a crash Saturday night in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Officials say three officers of the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and one member of the Bernalillo County Fire Department were aboard the Metro 2 helicopter at the time of the disaster.

The victims were named as Undersheriff Larry Korn, Lt. Fred Beers, Deputy Michael Levison, and rescue expert Matthew King by the sheriff’s office.

According to the sheriff’s department, the first responders were on their way back to Albuquerque after supporting fire crews with the East Mesa Fire.

The area, which is roughly 120 miles northeast of Albuquerque, was declared safe by New Mexico State Police. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were both expected to examine the incident, according to state police.
