August Anthony Alsina Jr. was born on September 3, 1992, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the son of Sheila and August Alsina Sr., and he grew up with four brothers and sisters: Jamal, Travis, Netia, and Melvin. August was motivated to become a performer after witnessing Lauryn Hill in “Sister Act 2,” and at the age of 14, he began uploading videos on YouTube.

After their mother, Chandra, died of cancer in 2018, August became the legal guardian of his three nieces, Chaylin, Amaiya, and Kayden. Chandra was engaged to Alsina’s brother Melvin at the time of his unsolved death in 2010.
