Assailant Shoots and Injures 2 Police Officers in New Jersey

N.J.-NEWARK — Officials in New Jersey have verified that a gunman on a rooftop in Newark on Tuesday shot and injured two police officers.

One officer was shot in the neck and the other in the leg by a gunman with a long gun, according to State Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, who represents the city in the state legislature, as reported by The New York Times.

Both policemen were taken to local hospitals for treatment after the incident, which Caputo confirmed to the newspaper took place in Newark’s South Ward.

WNBC has heard from sources close to the investigation that the suspect, who was still at large as of Tuesday afternoon, escaped to the roof of a nearby building after opening fire.

The TV station reported that the injured officers were executing a search warrant at a house near Van Velsor Place and Chancellor Avenue when they came under fire.

Injured cops were not immediately identified by Newark police officials, and it was unclear what motivated the attack.
